A chronological overview of the development of writing from the 33rd century BCE to the present day

Scriptum ist ein Interface mit Installationscharakter, das die geschichtliche Entstehung von Schriftsystemen aus einer geochronologischen Perspektive darstellt. Die Installation wurde hauptsächlich für Museumsausstellungen konzipiert und besteht aus einer Wandprojektion, die durch Touch-Geräte im Raum von mehreren Nutzern gleichzeitig gesteuert werden kann. Auf der Projektion sind alle 145 von Noto Sans unterstützten Schriftsysteme zu finden und ihrem jeweiligen Entstehungsort entsprechend auf einer Weltkarte platziert. Die Arbeit beruht auf dem wissenschaftlichen Datensatz aus dem Projekt »The World’s Writing Systems«, aufrufbar unter www.worldswritingsystems.org. Die Installation soll sowohl Informationszwecken dienen als auch die Relevanz von Schrift für unser Kulturbild bewusst machen.

Der funktionale Prototyp ermöglicht die gleichzeitige Interaktion von drei Personen. Durch das Hinzufügen von weiteren Steuerungsgeräten kann die Installation auf bis zu sieben parallel laufende Anwendungen erweitert werden.

Scriptum is an installation-based interface that presents the historical origin of writing systems from a geochronological perspective. Primarily designed for museum exhibitions, the installation consists of a wall projection that can be controlled by multiple users simultaneously via multi-touch devices in the space. The projection displays all 145 writing systems supported by Noto Sans, mapped onto a world atlas according to their respective places of origin. The work is based on the scientific dataset from »The World’s Writing Systems« project, accessible at www.worldswritingsystems.org. The installation is intended to both inform and raise awareness about the relevance of script to our cultural identity.

The functional prototype allows for simultaneous interaction by three people. By adding additional control devices, the installation can be expanded to support up to seven parallel applications.
